In this example a die was cut to the original CAD data (surfaced math model), and then proceed to die tryout. During the tryout process, the die face was modified because the part was not being formed to it’s intended design. Some radii were shrunk, some expanded, and material was added and removed from the die face in various spots. This was done by hand, by an experienced tool and die maker until the part was being formed in the correct shape. However, since the die was hand modified, the die no longer conformed to the original CAD data and the electronic model ceased to be of use.

By digitizing the hand worked die and comparing the gathered point data with the original CAD data, the CAD could then be updated instead of starting completely over from scratch. This yields a substantial time and cost savings to our customers.
