DETROIT, MI -
GKS Inspection Services Inc. (GKS), a
division of Laser Design Inc, announced the expansion of its
Detroit-area dimensional inspection services capabilities with the
addition of a third Faro portable-CMM articulated arm. With the
purchase of the new Faro arm, GKS aims to serve the increasing interest
from its customers for on-site inspection and reverse engineering
services. The new 12’ Faro Platinum Faro arm is equipped with both
touch probe measurement and 3D laser scanning capability. GKS’ system
configuration includes Faro’s CAM2 measurement software and contact
probes along with a Laser Design SLP-330 laser scanner, high-end laptop
PC and Geomagic Studio & Qualify software.

According to Steve DeRemer, General Manager
of GKS Michigan, “Many of our customers prefer on-site inspection of
their parts. This makes a lot of sense for larger parts that are
expensive to ship as well as for highly proprietary or delicate parts.
By adding a third Faro arm, we help ensure that we have the capacity to
service our customers on a timely basis”. DeRemer indicated that GKS
selected the largest Faro model in order to be able to measure large
parts which are common in the area’s dominant automotive industry.
Jim Andrews, Supervisor of Engineering
Services at GKS Michigan, added, “While we have offered on-site
inspection services for many years, we are now seeing growing demand for
on-site reverse engineering services. In
some cases it is now possible to travel to the customer site,
laser scan a part and create a surface model without the part or the
data ever leaving the customer site.” He also noted that GKS has
trained operators who can travel virtually anywhere to perform on-site
services with the company’s Faro arms.
GKS Inspection
Services has been a leading provider of dimensional measurement and 3D
laser scanning services for 25 years. The company’s Plymouth, MI
(Detroit area) lab is accredited by the A2LA for Mechanical Testing and
Calibration. Their Michigan lab features numerous CMMs, vision systems,
laser scanners, surface analyzers and other inspection equipment.
GKS also has branch offices in Minneapolis, India and Korea.
The company’s seasoned metrologists and engineers are experienced
in automotive and many other manufacturing industries.
